Supporting workers at Liberty Steel - Stocksbridge
The announcement of up to 250 job losses at the Stocksbridge steel plan is devastating for workers, their families, and our whole community. Over the coming weeks and months I will be doing all I can to support those individuals who may be facing redundancy.
But to ensure the future of the industry requires broader recognition of its strategic importance to the UK as a whole. To that end I have started to petition the Government to provide support for the sector, not just in the immediate future but for the longer term.
I have arranged meetings with:
- the Business Minister, to ask what the Government is planning to do to help the steel industry in Stocksbridge and the UK as a whole
- representatives from UK Steel to discuss the challenges the steel sector is facing and what needs to be done to secure jobs in the future
- Liberty steel at Stocksbridge to talk to staff, directors and Union representatives to see how best we can work together to ensure workers are supported
Further news and updates will be provided over coming weeks.
