Transport - better bus services
Bus services across our constituency have become fragmented and no longer serve the people that need them most. And whilst it’s suggested that the number of people using them has fallen by around 20 per cent it isn’t clear whether that’s to do with rising fares, reduced services or something else. Whatever the cause - the fact is that people across our constituency need better, more, and more regular buses and I believe if we find a way to provide a better service people will start using them again.
So it was great to catch up with some of the members of Thurgoland Parish Council Transport Working Group who have been campaigning tirelessly for better bus services to connect the villages around Thurgoland. We also discussed the issues that local people face and the related importance of having a high quality and affordable bus network.
I first became involved with the Group around a year ago as I became aware of just how desperately our local bus services needed to improve.
Now that we have a Government committed to levelling up our Northern infrastructure - and a PM who loves buses - I’m hopeful that we will make good progress. I’ve already shared the Group’s ideas informally with Ministers from the Department for Transport and the Treasury - where they were well received, and I’ll be following up over the coming days, weeks and months.
