Trial of new bus service to reconnect Penistone's villages
I've been working with local groups for 18 months to deliver better rural bus services - and I’m delighted that the new Number 26 bus service is being launched tomorrow, 5 September 2020.
The route, run by South Pennine Community Transport, will serve some of the most remote villages around Penistone, helping to connect residents to facilities in Penistone, Stocksbridge and Fox Valley.
The launch of this service is the result of nearly three years of campaigning by the Thurgoland Parish Council Public Transport Working Group, which was bought together by the local parish council
Reliable bus services connect people with jobs, health care and services and without them our rural communities become unsustainable. After talking to local residents and hearing how cut off many had become, I was determined to do whatever I could to support the group in campaigning for a new bus service.
I am therefore delighted that the Number 26 will run on Saturday mornings throughout the Autumn, operating as a circular service starting at 9.30am from Thurgoland, stopping at Crane Moor, Wortley and Fox Valley then arriving at Penistone at 10am, and then will run hourly until 1:30pm.
Spread the word so that we get as many people as possible using the Number 26 - if the trial is a success we could see the bus operating from Monday to Saturday.
It's been a real privilege to work with local groups and with South Pennine Community Transport to come up with a sustainable rural transport model. I'll continue to work with local groups to seek funding for an expanded service. .
