British steel carbon footprint half that of equivalent Chinese imports
Steel is central to our leveling up agenda, and by ensuring UK steel manufacturers are properly able to play their part in the Government's wide ranging investment in major infrastructure projects we will be able to support the high skilled, well paid jobs that our local communities need.
During my visit to Speciality Steels in Stocksbridge, I learned how our local industry is using world-leading engineering techniques, and how it is a pioneer in green technology. I'm particularly pleased to see that our local manufacturers are committed to green steel initiatives, which have already seen the successful lowering of British steels carbon footprint so that it's half that of equivalent Chinese imports. I believe Stocksbridge steel can act as a flagship for green industry, as we use opportunities such as the COP26 global climate summit to drive forward a global, green agenda.
On Thursday 25th February, I asked a question in Parliament about how local steel manufacturers will be able to capitalise on the industry’s growing global market, and how we can establish Britain as one of the leaders in green steel.
High Growth Global Markets
"Steel manufacturers such as Liberty Speciality Steels in Stocksbridge produce high-quality components that are used across the world. Steel produced in Europe has half the carbon footprint of equivalent Chinese imports, and, as countries follow the UK’s lead in reducing emissions demands, demand for green steel will increase. How will my hon. Friend ensure that UK manufacturers such as Liberty Speciality Steels in Stocksbridge can capitalise on this growing market and make global Britain the world leader in green steel?"

There is a real opportunity here, is there not?
That is why the Government have a range of schemes in place to help the steel sector to expand its green exports into those growing global markets. That includes establishing a £250 million clean steel fund and providing £66 million through the industrial strategy challenge fund to help steel manufacturers to develop radical new technologies and establish innovation centres of excellence. These funds will be accessible to all UK steel manufacturers, including those in my hon. Friend’s constituency, which I am sure value her long-standing commitment to the sector, and her permanent and regular efforts to raise them in the House."
