Stocksbridge - Sheffield rail service
I met with Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps and officials from the Department for Transport to find out more about how we can restore the Stocksbridge to Sheffield passenger train line.
The next step is to get funding to put together a detailed business case for the project, looking at economic, social and environmental factors and how the line can connect into the existing network and so benefit the wider South Yorkshire region.
I will continue to work closely with Sheffield City Region - who are supportive of the project - and with the Don Valley Railway Group who have spent many years developing plans for the restoration of this passenger service.
I recognise that there's some concern from residents who live near the line about the potential disruption that the new train service might have on their local amenity. There's no question that any potential disruptions arising through the new service will be assessed and everything possible will be done to minimise impact. I have committed to do what I can to make sure that residents are consulted and their views properly represented as the scheme progresses.
